A Bevy of Premier Cru White Burgundies that Trounce Their Grand Cru Cousins: Sylvain Langoureau

The best way to learn Burgundy’s wines is to read the labels while drinking the wine. So we here at Waterford have set up a Burgundy tasting party for you! Five wines, all Premier Cru, from one producer - Sylvain Langoureau, and all from the village of Saint-Aubin.

As the appellation (AOC) notes, “Saint-Aubin is the color of sunshine, with golden highlights whose exact shade varies according to where it is grown and in what year. When young, it combines aromas of white flowers, flint, green almond, and orange flower. Richer fragrances come with age: beeswax and honey, marzipan, ambergris, and cinnamon. This is a firm and flattering wine - a bit sharp to start with but which becomes fleshier and fuller with time. This is a wine with real breeding.”

All these wines share these characteristics. What we are looking at here is delicious complexity of variations on a theme, driven by Mother Nature via weather, soil and aspect. This is the beauty of Burgundy, captured by the wine in the glass!
